Trump’s immigration stance resonates with voters

September 29, 2015

Relying on a Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) report, presidential candidate Donald Trump claimed taxpayers spend in excess of $52 billion annually to educate illegal immigrants. “The root cause of all the welfare payments to illegal aliens is the so-called ‘anchor baby’ phenomenon,” he explains.

It’s that kind of tough immigration rhetoric that has made Trump the GOP frontrunner. The other, of course, is building a wall, “a big beautiful wall.” This piece of the immigration debate really resonates with middleclass American voters who believe the king of construction could actually follow through with promises to secure the southern border with a big fence.

According to the US Border Patrol’s August reports, 10,000 unaccompanied minors and families were apprehended of those illegally crossing the southern border, doubling last years’ statistics. The increased detentions highlight just how porous the southern border remains and demonstrates the lure economic opportunity holds for anyone willing to invade America. So far this year roughly 36,000 minors have risked their lives to illegally cross into the US. Keeping these figures in mind, Border Patrol says for every person apprehended another three escape without detection or background checks.

Between 2010 and 2014, 5.2 million new immigrants settled in the United States. Mexico had by far the largest immigrant population in the country, with 11.7 million legal and illegal Mexican immigrants living in the United States in 2014. After declining from 2010 to 2013, the number of Mexican immigrants in the United States rose by 130,000 by 2014.

In September 2015, the Census Bureau released some of the data from the 2014 American Community Survey (ACS). The states with the largest numerical increases in the number of immigrants from 2010 to 2014 were Texas (up 380,000), California (up 362,000), Florida (up 315,000), New York (up 168,000), New Jersey (up 116,000), Virginia (up 95,000), Maryland (up 87,000), Pennsylvania (up 83,000), Massachusetts (up 77,000), Arizona (up 63,000), Washington (up 59,000), Georgia (up 52,000), and Minnesota (up 50,000).

Countries sending more than usual numbers to the US the last five years include Saudi Arabia (up 93 percent), Bangladesh (up 37 percent), Iraq (up 36 percent), Egypt (up 25 percent), Pakistan, India, and Ethiopia (24 percent). A new PEW Research report points out that roughly 14 percent of the US population is foreign born.

Another report from the National Population Council estimates one of every 10 families in Mexico, or approximately 1.3 million homes, depends on US remittances. Perhaps more shocking is an Inter-American Development Bank finding that one in five Mexican adults receives money from relatives working in the US.

In a half-hearted attempt to stem the flow of migrants, the Obama administration has spent $1.2 million in advertising throughout Central America and Mexico warning migrants of the dangers of illegally entering the US. It’s been reported by Fusion/Huffington Post that coyotes (human traffickers) rape 80 percent of the women before they reach America. Despite warnings from US advertisements, illegal immigrants admit that they often bribe Mexican officials to skirt roadblocks that act as a deterrence.

Adding to the illegal immigrant complicity was a federal court ruling in California that stated detaining families violates a long-term court agreement against detention. “The uptick in apprehensions in August coincides with the housing facility ruling,” Chris Cabrera, a Border Patrol agent in McAllen Texas and vice president of the local Border Patrol union told the Houston Chronicle. “And we’ve had people tell us they knew they were going to be released.”

The average cost to illegally enter the US varies. According to Competitive Enterprise Institute, unauthorized Mexican immigrants usually pay $4,000-10, 000 to cross the border. “The smuggling fee for unauthorized Central American immigrants is currently between $7,000 and $10,000. The smuggling fee for an unauthorized Chinese immigrant is about $75,000 The most recently compiled averages in 2005 show that unauthorized Asian immigrants pay $26,041 to come to America, Europeans pay $6,389, and Africans pay $2,200. The smuggled migrants do not have a green card, work permit, or other legal work authorization waiting for them in the U.S. when they arrive, but they still pay enormous sums of money.”

The rise in apprehensions is bad news for amnesty advocates who encourage open borders. It also draws voters to GOP presidential contenders who are using the illegal immigration issue to build support among a crowed GOP field. Leading the effort to curtail illegal immigration is Donald Trump. His unconventional campaign has tapped into middle class fears that opportunities and success are being squandered by illegal immigration.

Using Census Bureau numbers, the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) found the US immigrant population, both legal and illegal, stood at 42.4 million as of last July. “The growth in the foreign-born population has accelerated over the past few years and immigrants now comprise about one out of every eight U.S. residents, the highest percentage in more than a century,” CIS latest analysis highlighted.

So, if the migrants are fleeing for economic reasons, where are they getting the travel money?  According to a Pew 2013 research report, a total of $52.9 billion in remittances were sent worldwide, but the bulk, $41.9 billion went to Latin America. Those remittances leave the US economy and often end up in the hands of drug cartels and coyotes.

On top of the $52.9 billion remittance figure, a nonpartisan Washington DC group dedicated to researching legal and illegal immigration in the US found immigrants benefit from America’s vast social welfare programs. The report found “the majority of households across the country benefitting from publicly-funded welfare programs are headed by immigrants, both legal and illegal. States where immigrant households with children have the highest welfare use rates are Arizona (62%), Texas, California and New York (61% each) and Pennsylvania (59%). The study focused on eight major welfare programs that cost the government $517 billion the year they were examined. They include Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for the disabled, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), a nutritional program known as Women, Infants and Children (WIC), food stamps, free/reduced school lunch, public housing and health insurance for the poor (Medicaid). Food assistance and Medicaid are the programs most commonly used by illegal immigrants, mainly on behalf of their American-born children who get automatic citizenship. On the other hand, legal immigrant households take advantage of every available welfare program, according to the study, which attributes it to low education level and resulting low income. The highest rate of welfare recipients come from the Dominican Republic (82%), Mexico and Guatemala (75%) and Ecuador (70%), according to the report, which says welfare use tends to be high for both new arrivals and established residents.”

Every time the “Amnesty or pathway to citizenship” argument arises, lawmakers stakeout their territory—the left plays the compassionate card and the right says secure the border. But didn’t Congress already pass the Secure Fence Act of 2006?

President George W. Bush proclaimed the “bill will help protect the American people. This bill will make our borders secure. It is an important step toward immigration reform.” The Act set out to use 21st century technology to build a fence that would stem the tide of illegal immigration and drug trafficking. It authorized the construction of 700 miles of additional fencing along the southern border with Mexico, added vehicle barriers, checkpoints and lighting to prevent illegal immigration; it also authorized the Department of Homeland Security to use cameras, satellites and drones to reinforce the border infrastructure at a cost of $10.4 billion in 2007. The Act passed in the Democrat controlled House with a vote of 283-138 and Senate 80-19 (with then Senator Obama’s support).

Unfortunately, the political promises died in the appropriation process where the new secure border bill failed to be funded in the Congress’ infamous “bait and switch tactic” that allows lawmakers to campaign on border security knowing full well it will never be fully funded or completed.

Last year President Obama unveiled his version of amnesty by using his well-worn amnesty pen. The plan grants legal status to approximately 5 million illegal immigrants. “If you’re willing to pay your fair share of taxes,” the President said, “you’ll be able to apply to stay in this country.” Obama neglected to mention that the majority of illegal immigrants are so low income that they would pay no net income taxes; moreover they are eligible for welfare benefits like Obama care and Earned Income Credit worth thousands in “free” money from taxpayers. A 2006 report from the left-leaning Century Foundation said, “It is likely that the undocumented workers will end up receiving rather than paying the Treasury money.”

With a net loss in the costs associated with illegal immigration, American voters seem drawn to  a strong president that would actually enforce laws on the books and turn off the spigot of freebies. One program that could eliminate illegal immigrants from working in the US is E-Verify. The electronic program allows employers to verify the employment eligibility of their employees. The program was authorized by the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRIRA) and allows employers to submit information taken from a new hire’s Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form) through E-Verify. The Social Security Administration and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) then determine whether the information matches government records and whether the new hire is authorized to work in the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security said, “we facilitate federal agencies and employers comply [sic] with U.S. immigration law.” This is the program the Mitt Romney referenced when he concluded that illegal immigrants would self-deport if they were unable to secure a job. While E-Verify is 98 percent effective, only a small fraction of employers use the program. Along with the Chamber of Commerce, Republican leadership also opposes mandating E-Verify and welcomes a pathway to citizenship.

Furthermore, support for Mr. Romney’s comments on the self-deportation of illegal immigrants was proven when Arizona, a state with tough illegal immigrations laws, limited benefits to illegals caused 110,000 of the estimated 360,000 illegal immigrants in Arizona to flee the state, according to a 2012 DHS report.

Experts told AZ Central News, “the primary factor behind the exodus was the lack of jobs during the recession, but tighter border enforcement and tough immigration laws also played a role.”

And finally an overlooked financial burden placed on Americans is the cottage identity theft industry. Millions of average Americans fall victim to identity theft by illegal job seekers who use their social security numbers to obtain jobs or access government benefits.

One case reported by the Associated Press involved a Kansas resident, Candida Gutierrez, whose total identity was allegedly stolen by illegal alien Benita Cardona-Gonzalez. The perpetrator used the identity to get a job; a driver’s license, a mortgage and medical care for the birth of two children. Gutierrez said, “When she claimed my identity and I claimed it back, she was informed that I was claiming it too. She knew I was aware and that I was trying to fight, and yet she would keep fighting. It is not like she realized and she stopped. No, she kept going, and she kept going harder.”

The common practice forces victims to spend many hours cleaning up their credit history. Mrs. Gutierrez tried to get the Social Security Administration to give her a new number only to find out that the illegal immigrant did this as well, so the agency ended up issuing a new number to the criminal and forced Gutierrez to file federal income tax forms using an ITIN, which illegal aliens normally use.

Officials say identity thieves become more confident when they remain undetected over time. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brent Anderson, who is prosecuting the Cardona-Gonzalez case said, “And so that is a natural progression, and that is what we are seeing.” Anderson said more cases of total identity theft will be litigated “because we all know what is going on out there — which is thousands and thousands of people who are working illegally in the United States under false identities, mostly of U.S. citizens, and very little is being done about it. But we are doing something about it, one case at a time.”

If the majority of the traffic were the result of a porous border, logic dictate’s investing resources to build a fence would be the most cost-effective solution. The majority of voters favor securing the border, yet Congress continues to argue with one another and kick the can down the road.

Outgoing Speaker John Boehner was out of step with his caucus and GOP voters on immigration. While most Republican lawmakers and voters vehemently oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants, in the past Boehner and his leadership team have supported the 2013 “gang of eight” comprehensive amnesty bill.
While most GOP members and voters want Congress to defund Obama’s executive amnesty programs, Boehner and his leadership team have repeatedly backed down from confrontations with the White House. Earlier this year, both Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell failed to hold the president accountable by withdrawing provisions from a Homeland Security funding bill that would have squashed any funds to implement the president’s unconstitutional amnesty via executive order.

But GOP voters looking for a change in the House won’t get it from the frontrunner Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). As part of Speaker Boehner’s leadership team, McCarthy supported the Senate’s “gang of eight’s” comprehensive immigration reform that included a form of amnesty.

The claims that the US does not have an immigration law is misplaced in that the US admits a million legal immigrants each year after they file an application, pay a fee, submit to medical and economic scrutiny, study civics, take a language test, swear an oath to the US, and denounce their former homelands. Some immigrants wait years to obtain immigration in following the legal process, which oftentimes results in long periods of separation from their family members. Many illegal immigrant supporters claiming due process for border crashers forget or ignore the due process and hardship endured by legal immigrants in their rush to the border.

Immigration by the numbers

September 14, 2015

Nobel Laureate Dr. Henry W. Kendall said, “If we don’t halt population growth with justice and compassion, it will be done for us by nature, brutally and without pity – and will leave a ravaged world.”

While massive population growth may eventually lead to human extinction, today’s war ravaged countries have created the largest mass migration since WWll. But will the refugees escaping a war zone add significant burdens on the West that could eventually lead to even more immigrants seeking refuge in first world countries?

After traveling across six continents on a bicycle, Frosty Wooldridge, author and lecturer, witnessed firsthand what Dr. Kendall meant by over population.  Asia provides the best example of exponential growth and Frosty saw the ecological damage, shortage of portable water, sewage pollution, carbon emission exhausts, lack of food, not to mention the loss of any quality of life due to human crowding.

Like Kendall, Wooldridge discovered and firmly believes it’s important to lower the human fecundity rate. “Exponential growth cannot and will not be tolerated by Mother Nature.  She already starves to death over 10 million children annually and another eight million adults,” he said.

Wooldridge contends that by 2050, humans will have used most of the oil on the planet.  Taking a look in the history books illustrates numerous civilizations self-destructing.  But could America be on a similar collision course? Without significant change, 35 of America’s largest cities will double by 2050. Major cities like Los Angeles sporting 12 million; New York City with 19 million; Mexico City with 19 million; Bombay with 20 million; Sao Paulo with 20 million; Delhi with 22 million will create impoverished majorities.

In his book Unguarded Gates, Dr. Otis Graham said; “Most Western elites continue urging the wealthy West not to stem the migrant tide [that adds 80 million net gain annually to the planet], but to absorb our global brothers and sisters until their horrid ordeal has been endured and shared by all—ten billion humans packed onto an ecologically devastated planet.”

Currently the world population stands at 7.1 billion human beings, of which approximately 57 million people die off from all causes—old age, war, disease, starvation and other violence.  At first glance the numbers seem balanced, but in most third world nations the poor cannot or do not believe in birth control. As a result they not only replace the 57 million that died but they add another 80 million babies every year. According to the PEW Research Center, humans will break 10 billion by 2050 and are on track to reach 14 billion by the end of the century.

As global transportation means improve, it’s reasonable to believe those seeking a better and more modern, quality of life outside their impoverished countries will pressure western countries to assimilate them. The United Nations estimates those 122 million annual survivors will require food, water, housing, as well as education. This will all require taxpayer funding.

Wooldridge described the dire situation in Africa on a recent bicycle trek. “Egypt alone with its 82 million subsisting on desert sands expects to reach 150 million by mid century. Egypt depends on grains from the West to feed its human multitude, but as oil depletes and costs more, Egyptians will not be able to buy food.  They face mass starvation.  Hundreds of thousands live on the brink in Somalia, Sudan, Congo, and South Africa.  All of Asia lives on the edge.  A full one billion human beings worldwide cannot secure a clean glass of water daily.”

Africa, India, Indonesia, Mexico, the Middle East and Bangladesh continue growing their populations without pause. First world countries must ask themselves if they want to tread that path?

“From my world travels to all those places facing human chaos, I can unequivocally state that the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia stand on the edge of a demographic cliff.  They cannot and will not save those developing world countries from their own fecundity folly, but if they continue immigration without pause—those first world countries will surely sink into the abyss of the same conditions that the refugees fled,” Wooldridge explained. “At some point, the United States must take stock of its path. It must decide on its future.  On the current path, it faces demographic disaster.  That’s a mathematical certainty.  It’s only a matter of time.”

Nevertheless, under current immigration law, Congress legally allows another 100,000 immigrants every 30 days in the US.

Dr. Bartlett pointed out that; “No species can overrun the carrying capacity of a finite land mass. This Law cannot be repealed and is not negotiable.”

So what are scientists doing to alert governments around the world about the impending extinction?  “At present, we race along making a pact with the ‘devil’ in what we call a Faustian Bargain or, we keep adding people and burning up our resources for the luxury of the moment; as if tomorrow will never come.  When tomorrow eventually arrives, we shall face a Hobson’s choice.  You won’t like his choice.  We will have only two choices… Door A leads us over a cliff and Door B allows us to fall into quicksand with no lifeguards.  In other words, our civilization faces collapse and we’re all screwed with no choices.”

Can America lead the world in this quest for a sustainable future?  Can it change its course from its current overload of 315 million on its way to 625 million within this century and probably on toward 1 billion in the first part of the 22nd century?

Migration from hell-Christians left behind

September 6, 2015

Actions have consequences. And war is no different. The massive migration from the Middle East to Western Europe is nothing more than the result of sustained war in the region. For this America plays a direct role. Make no mistake US bombs are reigning down throughout the Middle East. Whether it’s arming incompetent Iraq soldiers or standing by while radical Islamists remove secular dictators from power. Libya, Egypt and most prominently Syria are good examples of inept foreign policies dating back 20 years.

While American’s turn their eyes away from the TV screen, politicians on a month-long vacation did nothing to lead the world. As for President Obama, his motto appears to carry on like his policies are working when in reality they have done nothing but exacerbate the imploding Middle East. If Obama doesn’t see it, it must not be happening– shame on America for letting him get away with this inaction.

The US is currently participating in xenophobic actions of its own. However, it’s not the Muslims, it’s the Iraqi Christians.  There are currently 70,000 on a waiting list seeking refuge with full sponsorships from relatives and friends in America. AKA, the families will not take welfare, housing or food benefits because their families will take care of them, kinda like the current US immigration laws are supposed to require. Of course the political class overlooks the immigration laws already on the books, and turn a blind eye to millions of displaced refugees in an effort to retain their power in Washington DC.

So far the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has paved the way for 300,000 Muslims to join families in the US without assurances that the taxpayer will end up footing the bill. Juxtapose the “Iraqi Christians’’ who are escaping almost certain genocide and the administration has jailed some for more than six months. Most would say that’s what happens when you cross the border illegally, except these Iraqis turned themselves in to border officials.

Efforts to secure their release have met with polite handshakes from politicians and little media coverage. And when Minority Humanitarian Foundation’s founder Mark Arabo staged a protest, he was told to stop creating the uproar. Arabo’s attempt to shine the light on this issue earned the Christian detainees more detention. The US government bureaucrats decided retaliate against the Christians, according to attorneys who have been warned not to talk to the media or their clients will pay the price.

The world agrees there’s a refugee problem, but what they fail to recognize it’s a problem of there own making. Why aren’t these refugees trekking to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, Israel or Kuwait? Turkey and Jordan have taken the lion’s share of refugees and as a result those countries are struggling to stay afloat.

In Syria alone, nine million have been displaced and are considered refugees (Syria’s prewar population was 23 million). Many are making the dangerous trek to Western Europe to resettle. There is nothing left for them at home, bombs have flattened a once thriving secular country, the Syria they knew is gone forever.

If Middle East countries are mortified by the terror blazing through the region like a California wildfire, why aren’t they fighting? Why aren’t they caring for the millions that are displaced? For the most part they share traditions, language and regional location.

Perhaps more dubious is America’s reaction to the Iraqi Christians. With WWll’s Nazi concentration camps, Bosnian and Rwandan genocide in the rearview mirror, how can America sit by and prevent those, lucky enough to survive death from ISIS, from resettling with their families at no taxpayer cost?

Boys that reject ISIS suffer gruesome mutilation

September 1, 2015

While Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) continues its documented rampage on Christian girls turning them into sex slaves, new reporting has uncovered the fate of teenage boys. The radical Islamic jihadis force captured teenaged boys onto the battlefield to face death, or become a suicide bomber or face amputations before screaming crowds. The targeting of children dates back centuries, but the latest grisly storyline emerges from NBC’ Richard Engel reporting highlights just how brutal Middle East war is for non-Muslim teenage boys captured by the ISIS terror network. ISIS also follows the “take no prisoner” approach by terrorizing all who oppose them if they do not embraced the barbaric acts completely devoid of any respect for human life.

The newly detained boys, according to Engel, leave few options for the boys after torture. The boys can either fight alongside ISIS after indoctrination camp or they can elect brainwashing camp. The boys are introduced to the glory of martyrdom, which is filmed and later used for propaganda purposes. Some choose to run—and if caught, the jihadis chop off their right hand (the clean hand in Islam) and left foot. This tactic leaves the victims with a permanent unclean stigma that will shame them for life.

Of course, the terrorists highlight their humanity by publically showing the care taken to avoid infection prior to the gruesome act by using a tourniquet, and dousing the area to be severed with iodine, and having a doctor present to quickly stitch-up the open wounds. The town square demonstrations are carried out by an Iraqi aptly named the “Bulldozer,” who chops off the limb with a hearty “Allah Akbar,” God is great.

Unfortunately, the horrific act of disfiguring boys is another reminder that life in the Middle East under ISIS is a nightmare for non-Muslims and women and children pay a hefty price.

“Mohammed, 14, uses a wheelchair to move around the tiny apartment where he lives in the Turkish city of Sanliurfa with his brother and a friend of the family who acts as his nurse,” Engel’s report noted. “ISIS chopped off Mohammed’s right hand and left foot two weeks ago. ISIS tried to turn Mohammed into a child soldier. The group disfigured him because he refused to cooperate.”

The interviews were conducted in Turkey with the help of Syrian advocates as well as a former ISIS leader who defected in order to reveal the latest horrors involved in creating the newest version of the Hitler youth.

Some teenagers spoke about their days before capture as well as life inside ISIS prisons. Mohammed (his true identity was not revealed for security reasons) was a spotter, helping the Syrian rebels target ISIS. “First we were going to (anti-government) demonstrations. Later on we got armed with the Free (Syrian) Army, and we fought the (Bashar) al-Assad regime for three years.”

But as fate would have it the power transferred last year in eastern Syria. ISIS’ easy victory over the Iraqi army in Mosul left the terrorists with 2,000-plus US Humvees, a treasure trove of American arsenal and the wherewithal to dominate eastern Syria, bulldozing its competition. “I stayed at home for seven months,” Mohammed said. “Later on, ISIS started arresting members of the Free (Syrian) Army. One of the detainees told them that I was also member.”

Once arrested, boys were locked in ISIS jails for couple of months. He explained that everyone is tortured with beatings and electric shocks to their genitals. “Many people died there. No water, no electricity. They provided water twice a day. We used the toilet once a day,” he told NBC. The one’s who survived were sent to indoctrination camp, where they could join the child soldiers that ISIS’ dubbed the caliphate cubs.

A call to the glory of martyrdom is a part of the brainwashing. “They asked us, ‘Who wants to be a martyr?’ One of the boys who was with us, he was 12 years old. He blew himself up in an area called Haditha (in Iraq),” another escaped child soldier explained.

Both boys related that ISIS’ targets boys to generate a steady stream of new radicals.“They are fooling children with money,” Mohammed says. “They are fooling them to bomb themselves. They give a boy some money, or a bicycle, and after two days they take him in a car to bomb himself. They target children the most. They focus on children, because children are unaware of anything in this life.”

US cluster bombs kill civilians in Yemen

September 1, 2015

The seven month sustained air campaign in Yemen continues to devastate the impoverished Gulf Nation, however, making the humanitarian crisis worse are the reports that Saudi Arabia is using US made cluster bombs to root out the Iranian proxy fighters.

Human Rights Watch has recovered photographic evidence and reported to the UN.that seven Saudi-led airstrikes, which enjoy the Obama administration’s support, were discovered to have employed cluster-bombs in Yemen.

“While the United States is not formally part of the Saudi-led coalition, it is assisting the coalition air campaign by providing intelligence and aerial refueling facilities to coalition bomber jets, “ according to Foreign Policy. “The sum total of its assistance to the coalition makes the United States partly responsible for civilian casualties resulting from unlawful attacks.”

Human Rights Watch discovered evidence that cluster munitions landed approximately 250 yards from villages in Yemen. They also found that some “cluster munitions malfunctioned calling into question the (US) required failure rate of 1 percent or less as their submunitions failed to disperse from the canister, or dispersed, but did not explode. The findings raise serious questions about whether the US export law requirements are being violated,” HRW argued.

“I don’t have an outcome of that to report,” State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said. “We take all accounts of civilian deaths in the ongoing hostilities in Yemen very seriously.”

As part of the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program all US contracts require governments purchasing American cluster bombs to “… commit that cluster munitions will only be used against clearly defined military targets and will not be used where civilians are known to be present or in areas normally inhabited by civilians,” Rathke claimed. Meanwhile Obama still supports the proxy war. Rathke did admit that the State Department “ shares the concerns regarding unintended harm to civilians caused by the use of cluster munitions.”

What exactly is a cluster bomb?

A cluster bomb contains hundreds of sub-munitions that can look like a grenade to the untrained eye and upon release the sub-munitions explode causing injuries to people or damage to equipment or vehicles. The U.S. used cluster bombs extensively in the Vietnam War and is one of 17 countries that continue to produce cluster munitions or reserve the right to do so. The majority of the world signed a Convention on Cluster Munitions treaty in 2010. However, the U.S. along with Brazil, China, Egypt, Greece, India, Iran, Israel, North Korea, South Korea, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia and Turkey have not ratified the treaty (not surprisingly many of these same non-signatories are the leading weapons traffickers in the world today- for information- link here). International law ruled in 2008 to ban the use of cluster bombs.

The cluster bombs used in Yemen were BLU-108 “skeets” from CBU-105 Sensor Fuzed Weapons. The Convention on Cluster Munitions prohibits the use of this bomblet arsenal. But the US government states it’s the only cluster bomb it manufacturers and “that meet[s] our stringent requirements for unexploded ordnance rates.” Nevertheless the State Deptartment only approves the sale of the devastating bomblets if the country agrees to never use them in civilian neighborhoods. In fact, these cluster munitions may only be exported if the recipient agrees not to use them in civilian areas, unfortunately in Yemen, monitoring the use of cluster bombs proves elusive.

So where are the bomblets being dropped?

The village of Tahrur is located just north of Aden. It was supposed to be safe for civilians at the neighborhood school. But far too often, what was supposed to be, proved unreliable. The Middle East’s poorest country and its civilians felt the one two punch of the Saudi air raid. They knew the sound and heard the explosions, but residents didn’t suspect the two odd looking canisters.

As it turns out the cluster bomblets were made in America by Textron Corporation and sold to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) under the FMS program. According to Mary Wareham Advocacy Director for HRC, the munitions “are part of a Saudi-led coalition that has been attacking Houthi forces, also known as Ansar Allah, in Yemen since the end of March.

The victims were members of the same family, five women and four kids. “The school had been housing families displaced by the conflict between a Saudi-led military coalition and Houthi armed groups and their allies, which took control of the capital Sanaa and large swaths of the country late last year,” Foreign Policy reported. “Ten other relatives, mostly children, were injured in the attack.”

Human Rights Watch investigators inspected the village a few weeks later and uncovered one of the bomblet canisters lying next to the road. Luckily villagers didn’t move the unspent canisters, as the sub-munition could explode at anytime.

“The loss of civilian life in Hajja shows why most countries have made a commitment never to use cluster munitions,” said Ole Solvang, a senior emergencies researcher. “These weapons not only kill or injure people at the time of attack, but the unexploded submunitions go on killing long afterward.”

HRC points out that the use of cluster bombs constitute war crimes and alerted the UN to the data they recovered in Yemen. Meanwhile Amnesty International is calling for the end to the bombing altogether in an effort to send a strong message to the belligerents that additional abuses will not be tolerated.

The past few decades DC defense contractors have supplied the Middle East with unprecedented amounts of military equipment and the world is watching what the KSA-led coalition is unleashing in Yemen.

The World Health Organization said that at least 1,000 Yemenis have been killed, another 3,500 have been reportedly injured and millions have been displaced or considered refugees.

More on cluster bombs: Porous American borders too tempting for terrorists to ignore

A troubling storyline is developing along the U.S. southern border—more high-powered weaponry. Law enforcement agencies on America’s southern border have also confiscated a variety of military explosive devices– including sub-munitions.

Entering or exiting the United States, Juliette and Noe Ramirez were apprehended at the Texas/Mexico border on August 2, 2014 carrying sub-munitions, more commonly known as bomblets used in cluster bombs. “Juliette Ramirez was detained late Saturday night near the toll booth plaza north of the Del Rio International Bridge after a small explosive device was found hidden in a backpack,” the Del Rio News Herald reported.

According to the separate District Court charging sheets (link here), Ms. Ramirez and Mr. Ramirez were walking south toward the Mexican border when CBP/HSI agents “randomly” approached the pair and searched a backpack in their possession. Federal agents say they were stunned to find an explosive device. The discovery prompted further questioning of the Ramirezes, which subsequently led agents to a secondary location where 35 more sub-munitions were located. (Note: Anyone crossing into Mexico knows the U.S. focuses its attention on northbound traffic– it’s Mexico’s responsibility to question pedestrians travelling south. Just look at the Marine still in Mexican custody for crossing into Mexico with his lawful U.S. firearms.
